My Crohn's Story So Far...

Crohn's Disease in an autoimmune disease that occurs mostly in the intestines. I can also cause other problems in your body due to lack of absorption and nutrient deficiencies. I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 14 years old. Since then I have been on many different medications including Pentasa, Asacol, Prednisone, Mercaptopurine (6MP), Humara, and Remicade. In 2008 I found relief with 6MP. I still had occasional flares, but life was a bit easier. I have moderate to severe Crohn's in my large and small intestines. I have had 7 miscarriages which, I believe, were due to lack of nutrition and Crohn's flaring. I also have a hole that has been eaten away in my nose septum. We think this is also a reaction of my Crohn's and the inflammation throughout my body.

In to 2011- I was pregnant for the 7th time. All of my previous pregnancies had ended in early miscarriages between 5 and  9 weeks. This time I had found out I have a MTHFR heterozygous mutation. Usually this goes untreated by doctors, but I did my research and pushed my doctor to let me try Heparin blood thinning shots. I also pushed to stay on my 6MP and both doctors complied.

My pregnancy progressed and as the due date drew near my doctors decided that because of my Crohn's and some disease activity I had been having during pregnancy- a Cesarean Birth was my safest option. I was also told I would not be able to be able to breastfeed my baby because of the 6MP I was still taking to keep my Crohn's in check. I didn't know how to react other than to accept it. So we moved forward.

In January 2012 my beautiful baby boy was born healthy and happy. My recovery was fast and I really felt pretty good considering all my body had went through. Over the next few months I flared a few times and was struggling with having the energy to get my before baby body back.

In October 2012 I was introduced to Shakeology. I researched the product and was very excited about the potential that it showed to help me not only with my weight, but mostly with what it would mean for my Crohn's. I had high hopes that it would help me get off of my medication for good. I took the plunge and bought a bag. Within 2 weeks I could tell a huge difference. I could not believe it. I actually felt like I was getting the nutrients I needed! I felt like my body was finally starting to recover.

April rolled around and I had lost 15 pounds, was 10lbs under my pre baby weight, and I hadn't flared with my Crohn's in months! I found out I was pregnant again. I stopped drinking Shakeology because I was unsure of what I would do during pregnancy. I immediately became super bloated, nauseous, exhausted, and my bowels were in knots. Finally at 10 weeks pregnant I started drinking Shakeology again and almost immediately my morning sickness was gone (I had been taking Zofran twice a day to combat it), my bowels stopped hurting, my bloat began to disappear, and my energy was back!!!

I decided since Shakeology was helping me so much that I would try to wean myself off of 6MP so that I will be able to breastfeed. I am now completely off of 6MP and treating my Crohn's with diet and exercise. I feel better than I have in over 10 years!

I strongly believe that Crohn's Disease CAN be treated with CLEAN EATING, EXERCISE, AND POSITIVE THINKING! I would love to hear your Crohn's story and chat with you about your goals and dreams for recovery and remission. I believe education is the key and with communication and collaboration we can help each other find a CURE FOR CROHN'S!
